6 Things to Know About Planting a Cut Flower Garden

There’s something special about the way a fresh cut flower arrangement can brighten a room. While you can always pick up a fresh arrangement from your local florist, many flower lovers choose to grow their own cut flower gardens at home, planting varieties that are perfect for cutting and arranging at home. With the right garden and a little training in how to put together a balanced arrangement (like we teach in our Cut & Create classes!), a home gardener can create beautiful bouquets from their own garden.

Planting your own cut flower garden requires some expertise and planning. On June 8, we’re hosting a class that teaches all you need to know about how to plant and maintain a cut flower garden. Here are some of the things we’ll cover in the class:

1 - What kinds of flowers are best for cut flower gardens

Some varieties of flowers are just better than others for arrangements. The size, shape, style, and growing conditions are all important factors to keep in mind. You’ll also want to consider planting both annuals and perennials, which can help you keep up your garden year after year. At our workshop, we’ll show you which varieties are our favorites for cut flower gardens, and we’ll share our expertise on how you can choose the right variety that will make for stunning arrangements!

2 - Whether to grow in a container or garden bed

Depending on your property and space, you may have a lot of options for where to grow, or you might be limited to containers. It’s good to think about which plants are best suited for different locations and container sizes to make sure you’re selecting plants that will thrive on your property.

3 - How to maintain and prune your plants

A healthy garden needs to be maintained with regular fertilizing, watering, and pruning. At our workshop, we’ll tell you what we’ve learned from years of keeping our own cut flower fields, and how with proper care, you can have healthy plants throughout the growing season.

4 - How and when to cut your flowers

How and when you cut a stem will impact both your floral arrangement and the plant! We’ll teach you how to cut flowers at the optimal time so that your bouquets are long lasting and beautiful. The right technique will also help to make sure that new blooms grow in place after you harvest, so you’ll have a steady stream of beautiful flowers throughout the season.

5 -What kinds of fillers to include in your garden

Beautiful bouquets have more than just bright colored blooms. Planting foliage is a great way to ensure that you have some fillers to round out your bouquet and provide balance. In class, we’ll show you what kinds of foliage we recommend and we’ll tell you more about how fillers make a difference in a beautiful bouquet.

6 - How to create a homemade floral arrangement

In our Cut & Create classes, we teach you all the skills you need to harvest and arrange a homemade floral bouquet. In our class on June 8, we’ll give you a few basics, and you’ll leave with a coupon for one of our Cut & Create classes on July 14, July 26, August 16, or September 13.
